Tammy Mae Moon
Tammy Mae Moon grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri. As a child she was always drawing, and usually drawing ladies in medieval dresses. She has always been fascinated with history, myth, culture and our different perceptions of beauty. In college she took every mythology class that was offered and pursued a degree in Antiquities with a minor in Anthropology. It wasn't until she became a mother that she reconnected with her urge to create, to draw, and to paint.
After inheriting a set of soft pastels she began to concentrate on portraiture and figurative work. Tammy is a self-taught artist working in both soft pastel and acrylic paints. She is captivated with the feminine form, and this is the main point of expression in her work. Her art is pop surrealistic in nature with a strong sense of emotion in the eyes of her subjects. She explores themes of feminine strength and vulnerability along with the absurdity of our beliefs in beauty and perfection. She also draws upon her love and knowledge of myth and the role of the sacred feminine in many of her pieces. There are elements of nature in her work to connect the feminine psyche to the natural world. Birds are used as a symbol for the soul or as messengers from spirit and they appear often in her paintings.
Tammy now resides in Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and two children. She finds inspiration in the people that surround her, popular culture, and ancient stories. The advice of the late mythologist Joseph Campbell to follow your bliss has driven Tammy to create. His wisdom about the role of an artist has greatly inspired her too. When asked in “The Power of Myth” who interprets the divinity inherent in nature for us today, Campbell responded by stating it is the function of the artist to do this. The artist is the one who communicates myth for today.
